Reflections for Myself on “Cocktails and Content Creation”: “A Long, Winding Road”

Everything has a start. The first episode of Cocktails and Content Creation, “What is Content,” served as an introduction to the podcast’s hosts, the podcast, and their views of what is content.

That question of what is content evoked another reflection, where I listed out both Kate Andrews and Jessie Wyman’s definitions of content. You can follow this link to the post.

In the meantime, follow along as I consider not only the “long, winding road” that lead Kate and Jessie to their podcast but my own journey as a content writer.

My mischievous mind cannot help but conjure an image of Kate and Jessie being a well-balanced, mixed drink. Here’s why:

Kate Andrews is “the founder of Fashionably Kate & Co, blogger, freelance writer, and momma to Arielle, the cutest little girl.” At the time of this reflection, Kate welcomed a new addition to her family. She originally studied acting in New York where her writing a play review redirected her career into journalism and production. Her expertise as a content creator is the written word.

Andrews’ expertise complements Jessie Wyman, a brand photographer. Interestingly enough, Jessie started as an urban planner, freelancing her services, until she eventually switched gears to photography and niched to branding photography. Wyman actually inspired Kate into going the entrepreneur route when she had Arielle.

These two ladies met back in 2008 when Jessie worked with Kate’s husband, having their first meeting at the Sweetwater bar. Their paths continued to cross. Kate would write blogs for Jessie. Jessie would take photos for Kate.

One evening, Kate Andrews got a text from Jessie, saying they should start a podcast together.

Kate sent a text the next morning, asking, “Were you just tipsy or were you serious?”

“I think I was having a cocktail, but I was very serious,” Jessie recalled of the fateful text exchange that would start their podcast.

“So ‘Cocktails and Content Creation’ came from a love for getting together about the latest development from our respected fields,” Jessie explained on the podcast.

“Why not share those conversations?” Katie questioned. Both ladies met up regularly to talk, sharing their expertise to help each other grow. They wanted other content creators: fellow bloggers, brand photographers, and others from the content creation industry to partake in this chance to grow.

Besides loving how the podcast came up from over a cocktail, I loved how real Kate Andrews and Jessie Wyman talked about their personal journeys as professionals and friends. What better pair could come together to talk about content creation?

As for me, writing has always been a core part of my identity. It started back when I was in 4th grade when my dad told me one morning he was writing a book. His action inspired me to take up writing, which I shared on a previous blog post on how that started out.

What I noticed between my journey with Kate and Jessie is that we had our starts in different ways. While writing has been core to my identity, I had shuffled it to the side because it was not a real job and one that very few people could make a living at. That lead me to looking into teaching. Then when teaching did not work out, I looked into being an archivist. When an archivist wasn’t in my cards, I then took up being a barista, then a baby sister, and now currently a receptionist at a law firm.

Yet writing is where my heart truly belongs. 2021 was when I decided to pivot into a writing business. I make progress in my journey, taking 3 baby steps each day and celebrating my wins that go towards my business or my life.

If you did not check out Kate and Jessie’s insights on “What is content,” visit the reflection where I identified gems from the podcast.

Until my next reflection appears, have a wonderful life. <3

P.S. Here’s one of my drinks: Guinness. I have English and Irish roots from my dad’s side of the family. My mom and I went on a belated high school graduation trip to Ireland. The drink is smooth and dark, making one of those drinks that will late me quite a while.
