A Good Samaritan's Due

Updated: Apr 22, 2021

We know the story of the Good Samaritan. The person who does the right thing when they don’t expect anything in return. Well, I have a small anecdote to share.

I was driving home from my work. Rain poured on and off. Approaching a stop, I double took for a moment to discover a large tree branch on the road with a car there. It took me a few moments to realize the tree branch fell on the car, pinning it down. No one had been in danger as the branches only pierced the hood. It did not fall over the roof as no one appear injured. Still, how there was no police or help at hand haunted me.

So, what did I do? I got back to my place down the road, locked my valuables, pocketed my phone, and car keys, and jogged in the pouring rain back towards the accident to check that they were getting help. By the time I turned the bend, police lights greeted my view. Torn between satisfaction that they were getting help and a bit annoyed at getting soaked, I turned and hightailed it back.

Did I get anything from my attempt to be a Good Samaritan? Wet shoes, extras steps to my day, self-assurance that I did go back to check on the people, and a short blog post to share. Not too shabby.
